Burnt Cream French Toast

A decadent twist on classic French toast that combines the rich texture of crème brûlée with sweet, caramelized bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar, plus more for topping
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 8 slices of brioche or challah

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon until smooth.
  3. Dip each slice of bread into the custard mixture, coating both sides and allowing it to soak for 1-2 minutes.
  4. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and arrange the soaked bread slices in a single layer, pouring any leftover custard over them.
  5. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the top is golden brown and slightly puffed.
  6. Sprinkle a layer of granulated sugar on top and caramelize using a kitchen torch or by broiling for 2-3 minutes.
  7. Allow to cool slightly before serving warm with toppings like fresh fruit or whipped cream.

Notes

You can prepare the custard mixture a day ahead of time and refrigerate it overnight. Substitute heavy cream with half-and-half for a lighter option.
